Movements and the Outcome of The Battle of Antietam
Movements
In the battle of Antietam the Union generals Hooker, Mansfield, and Sumner advanced on the left side of the Confederate troops, forcing the Confederacy to apply more troops on the left in order for them to hold off the three divisions of the Union army. The Unions push through was unsuccessful so they pulled back, and had General Burnside and General Porter try to attack the right side of the Confederate army. With the Confederates numbers lower on the right side the Union was successfully able to force the Confederacy back until the reinforcements from General Hill had arrived. But for the remainder of the battle the Unions attacks were unsuccessful and the Confederate troops were able to keep the Union army from advancing any further into Sharpsburg.
Outcome
The Union won the battle of Antietam when they were able to hold the Confederacy back and force them to retreat into Northern Virginia. General McClellan of the Union army however did not pursue General Lee, which
leads to President Lincoln replacing McClellan as the main General of the Army after the battle is over. In total about 23,582 American casualties in the battle of Antietam making it the bloodiest day in United States history. This battle also allowed the issuing of the Emancipation Proclamation, by Abraham Lincoln.
